'Awful' fourth doesn't spoil Duncan's vintage night

LOS ANGELES -- Whatever glowing adjectives exist to describe excellence, San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan embodied them all through his performance Wednesday in leading his team's 111-107 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 2 of the Western Conference playoffs.

Yet as brilliantly as he played in regulation, Duncan approached the bench prior to the start of overtime to apologize to the team.

"I missed two or three layups. I made two or three defensive mistakes, got out of position and gave up dunks to DeAndre [Jordan]," Duncan said. "I was awful in that fourth quarter."

Luckily for the Spurs, Duncan's shaky quarter didn't spoil an otherwise virtuoso outing. Duncan poured in 28 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the victory, notching his 100th career playoff game in which he contributed at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.

In the process, Duncan became the fifth player in NBA history to score 5,000 career points in the postseason as the Spurs evened the series with the Clippers 1-1 heading back to San Antonio for Game 3 on Friday.

"He went into overtime and told us, 'Sorry for the fourth quarter, guys,'" said Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard, who had 23 points. "He then knocked down a few big-time shots in overtime to keep us in the game."

The Spurs held a 10-point lead with 6:46 remaining in the fourth quarter, but watched that evaporate when the Clippers outscored them 16-6 the rest of the way to force overtime tied 94-94.

During the final 3:12 of regulation and in the overtime period, Duncan played with five fouls, yet didn't let that negatively affect his impact on defense. He chipped in four of the Spurs' 17 points in overtime.

"Timmy's got a great mind. He's got a great feel for the game," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He knows the situation. In that case, he knew what position he was in. He's just smart. It has nothing to do with anything else except that he is smart. He knows he had to stay on the court, and he figured out a way to do it. He continued to be aggressive, which is pretty amazing."

Prior to all that, Duncan dazzled, too.

He scored eight points in the first and second quarters, and didn't miss his first shot until there was 2:05 remaining in the first half. Duncan didn't miss his second shot until there was 8:39 left in the third quarter, starting the game 12-of-15 from the field.

Half of Duncan's game-high 28 points came on post-up plays, according to ESPN Stats & Information. In all, the Spurs scored 16 post-up points against the Clippers in Game 2 after producing just six such points in the first game of the series on 3-of-9 shooting.

In the first half, Duncan nailed all four of his shots on post-ups for eight points, and hit 4-of-5 when cutting to the basket. Duncan's 16 points to start were his most before halftime all season. He also contributed four assists to go with a blocked shot.

"He was spectacular," said Popovich, who has won 13 of 19 playoff series when tied 1-1. "He continues to amaze me with the things he is able to do. He is a competitive guy. He always comes to play, and tonight, he got some shots to fall and did a great job for us."

During Duncan's tenure with the Spurs, the team has been down 1-0 in the first round of a postseason series on eight occasions, but has never lost Game 2, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

"You know what, I'm just trying to keep pace," Duncan said. "I don't have a secret. There's not a secret to it. I'm in a great system. I'm on a great team, and I'm not asked to do what I used to do. I'm asked to play a role, and I'm happy to play a role. I'm just trying to be as consistent as I can for my teammates."
